About this deal

This is a well thought out book, making the case for changes in police procedure but also pointing out that we all can connect better.

There’s such a thought-provoking consideration of morality threaded through as the catalyst for the narrative so that even when In the Blink of an Eye is finished, it resonates and unsettles the reader. Themes embodied in the story are complex, absorbing and challenging, but they are incorporated naturally so that they permeate the reader’s consciousness, making them question their own behavioural parameters. Even though we both are averse to sci-fi, we absolutely love police procedurals and agreed that the sci-fi element in this book seemed more "realistic" and like a literary device, not just something concocted for pure entertainment purposes with no bearing on reality. The book covers the different ways that grief can hit you so well and Kat is a great character, easy to imagine in the mind’s eye as you read. As Kat and Lock piece together what has happened to Tyrone and Will, the edginess increases so that the reader has a sickening sensation that they will not be the last two young men to vanish.I'm looking forward to the sequel, particularly if we can see more of the potential for entertaining interplay between Frank and Lock. Written before the digital age, it talks to students about the aesthetics and psychology of editing, rather than which key on your keyboard to press, which seems to dominate so much of the education surrounding editing today, with the technology overtaking the storytelling aspect. I thought the AI premise was such a brilliant concept, feeling scarily plausible and highly effective. What I like about Murch's thinking, as highlighted both in this and "The Conversations," is that he's as much a philosopher as he is a theoretician and many of the principles and ideas that he discusses are equally applicable in any other art form.

But we all know that computers can’t do everything and that a good gut instinct is not replaceable with code… yet. Best Quotes ‘Suggestion is always more effective than exposition’ 'Always try to do the most with the least’ ‘What they finally remember is not the editing, not the camerawork, not the performances, not even the story - it’s how they felt’ ‘Editing…is not so much a putting together as it is a discovery of a path’ ‘You could sit in one room with a pile of dailies and another editor could sit in the next room with exactly the same footage and both of you would make different films out of the same material’ 📔 Summary and Key Ideas 🎞️ Why Do Cuts Exist? The audiobook is narrated by two narrators which makes it a lot easier to follow the characters and immerses you more into the story. The wider team – Lock’s programmer, Professor Okonedo, DI Rayan Hassan, and DS Debbie Browne – are all very unique characters, who add a real sense of authenticity and texture to the book. The only thing we experience like it are dreams, and Murch surmises this is where the link is established.

A breathtaking debut that will have you eagerly awaiting the next instalment in what is set to be a beloved series' Jack Jordan 'An absolute cracker of a thriller. It also allows that engagement between those in human form and their AI colleague in a more natural way. But you can't deny that the speed at which AI can learn and spit out info is a huge value to humans, especially law enforcement. Past a certain point, the more effort you put into wealth of detail, the more you encourage the audience to become spectators rather than participants.

Once you have your fist cut, he recommends looking again at the original footage—things have changed now and maybe there is something in the original footage that could really help you out now, time permitting. A pesar del enfoque técnico y profesional que tiene el libro, Walter Murch sabe entretener al lector en todas sus explicaciones. This change allowed filmmakers to harness different angles and create ‘cumulatively greater impact’ within each moment of the film.
