If I ask you, through this life you’ve led and this knowledge you’ve taken in and that you teach people, how would you start to answer the question about how your sense of — your sense of what it means to be human, how that is evolving, how you’d start to think that through right now? Tippett: And we know the narrative — they fled. They fled. We never think, these were traumatized people. Menakem: That’s right — “I’m gonna get rid of it. I’m gonna go do some yoga, I’m gonna eat a whole bunch of kale.” [ laughs] But “I’m gonna do this thing…”

Experiencing Clean Pain

Caution : The author warns us about the reactions we might have as we begin to work, the result of energy releases. We need to be aware of defensive thoughts and to just experience the practices. Now, if you get reps in with that — not just do it one time or just when I tell you to — what you may notice is that you have a little bit more room for other — literally, for other things to happen that can’t happen when the constriction is like that.

It’s not even necessarily about actions you’re gonna perpetrate against other people. It’s about how you feel inside your body. That’s why I put the practices in there. And so that is a very important place that I think white bodies get to, sometimes, and they either genuflect to process or strategy, and then they never — Menakem offers the “five anchors” as embodiment practices to assist in remaining embodied while under real and/or perceived threat, and stay mindful, embodied and grounded in the here and now, so that we can manage and discharge racialized trauma instead of dissociate, react and recapitulate the cycle of abuse/violence.

I'm real tempted to justify my whole two-star review by simply reporting that the author advocates police officers taking bubble baths as a significant part of the solution to police brutality. The healing that results on an individual and group level can be taken into the community, for each of the groups that receive focus in the book, as well applying to the greater community.white-body supremacy lives in our BODIES; it's in our blood, dna, flesh, and the pre-cognitive parts of our brains (aka the lizard brain).
